Rio gets ready for Carnival - 22 Dec 2006
While the cold winter weather is dominating people's thoughts in the UK, Rio de Janeiro in Brazil is already thinking ahead to one of the biggest events in the world.
February sees the internationally famous Rio Carnival ? or Carnaval in Portuguese ? take place in the Brazilian city, an event that will make holidays in Brazil unforgettable and incredibly enjoyable.
Beginning on a Saturday in late February, it runs until 'Fat Tuesday', also known as Mardi Gras. The Sunday of the celebrations traditionally falls seven weeks before Easter Sunday.
The Rio Carnival is a great time to take a Brazil holiday, giving an authentic flavour of the South American country. Surrounded by colourful, musical festivities, you cannot fail to have an unbelievable time.
Once the celebrations have died down a little, there is plenty more to see on a holiday in Brazil. The magnificent statue of Christ the Redeemer is one such sight, while Sugarloaf Mountain is also a great tourist attraction.
