The Netherlands Antilles consist of three islands, known as the'SSS
Islands' in the Lesser Antilles and two further islands off the coast of
Venezuela.
St Maarten, between the seventeenth and nineteenth centuries, changed
hands between the French, Dutch, Spanish and British no less than sixteen
times until in 1839 an accord was reached to share the island. Now the
southern part is a Dutch territory with large resort hotels, casinos and
restaurants while the northern part is a French territory, known as Saint
Martin. St Eustatius, also known as Statia, two hundred years ago was one
of the most prosperous islands in the Caribbean and, although short on
tourist facilities, much work is being done to restore the cliff top town of
Oranjestad to its former colonial glory. The tiny island of Saba is
dominated by a peak known as Mount Scenery, is dotted by red-roofed
white-washed cottages and is renowned for its excelent diving.
Despite a confusion of names, the Netherlands Antilles offers some
particularly good beaches, as popular with surfers and body boarders as
with sun worshippers. The laid back attitude of the Dutch influences
creates a relaxed ambience both in the hotels and at the restaurants which
offer everything from seafood delicacies to beachfront barbecues.
