The capital of Qatar, Doha is situated halfway down the east coast of the peninsula. Wander round the city’s museums and the Doha Fort which has some interesting displays of traditional crafts, including carving, goldsmithing, rope-making and weaving. Less than two generations ago, Qataris made their living by diving for pearls, which is reflected in the art and architecture around the capital. Statues of pearls in oyster shells abound and the shell motif can be seen on many buildings.
Qatar’s jewel is the desert, and it is here that you will find the only desert in the world that embraces the sea. Take the time to venture out into the Qatari desert and satisfy the explorer in you. Look for desert roses, not flowers but crystals, which take the form of rose-petals. The dunes are dramatic and sandboarding is available for the more energetic.
Other activities include tennis, golf, snorkelling, scuba diving, windsurfing and a host of other watersports. There is varied marine life around the northeast coast of Qatar, including humpback and bottlenose dolphins, and the shy and elusive dugong, especially during February. There are also fishing trips available mainly for red snapper and hamour.
