The most easterly of the Greater Antilles. Puerto Rico is an island of
natural beauty that simply has to be explored. As part of the "US
Commonwealth", it shares the mainland's language, currency & positive
"can do" attitude but its great diversity of landscape, natural phenomena
and rich Hispanic, African and Taino Indian heritage offer visitors a
completely unique Caribbean holiday experience.
San Juan is a vibrant city and the modern districts are high-rise, although
there are some superb beaches where most of the international hotels are
located. The city is alive with lots of great restaurants & bars, really
buzzing Latin nightlife, casinos, shopping and has a thriving arts & cultural scene. Away from the city, is an island of great adventures,
beautiful beaches and fine cuisine. One of the natural highlights is the El
Yunque Rain Forest, located in the north east of the island which has more
than 200 species of trees. Forest trails are well signposted and the
waterfalls, flora and fauna are spectacular.
Eating out is incredible value for money. Chicken or seafood is included in
the traditional stew known as Asopao or as a tasty filling in empanadillas.
As throughout the Caribbean, fresh fruit is plentiful and the Duke de
Papaya is a delicious candied dish served with cheese.
