The mountainous island of Montserrat is affectionately named the
'Emerald Isle' because it was the Irish, back in the seventeenth century
who first arrived here having escaped persecution else where in the
Caribbean. They found a lush rain-forested island with fertile plains and
they set about building a community that thrived by cultivating sugar
cane. Their capital, Plymouth, was acclaimed as one of the most
picturesque towns in the entire region.
In little over ten years much of the character of the island has changed
following the devastation reeked firstly by a hurricane and then, in 1995,
by volcanic eruptions that sent dust clouds miles in to the sky and molten
lava across the southern part of the island. Plymouth was one of the many
communities destroyed.
The volcano, which is still active today is now a fascinating tourist
attraction and can be viewed from two vantage points, Garibaldi Hill in the
north and lack Boy Hill in the East. Forests and fertile fields in the Centre
Hills provide a stark contrast to the ash covered slopes further away. The
southern part of the island is still off limits but the north provides a
welcoming contrast to other parts of the Caribbean with silvery grey sand
beaches including Woodlands Beach, managed by the National Trust,
where swimming through caves can be safely enjoyed.
We encourage visitors to the Eastern Caribbean to spend just a few days on
the island of Montserrat to experience its genuine hospitality. Our holidays
are based on three night stays travelling from the neighbouring island
of Antigua.
