Lying just off the coast of Venezuela, Margarita has a stunning and varied landscape and a distinctly Latin American feel.
Margarita is spilt in two but linked by a narrow 18 kilometre stretch of sand which curves to form the beautiful lagoon of La Restinga, which is just one of the many natural attractions on the island, much of which has been given over to natural parks.
The beaches are long, sandy and varied. The most popular beaches are on the North and East coasts of the island, this is also where many of the resorts and hotels are located, and a variety of watersports are available.
Undoubtedly the best beach on the island is Playa El Agua on the North-East coast, it has fine golden sand, beautiful clear water and some great bars and restaurants.
There are two resorts on the South Coast, Pampatar and Porlamar. Pampatar is an historic fishing village where you can see the locals at work, Porlamar is the largest town on the island where you get a real taste of Venezuelan life. The town has tree lined boulevards, a selection of restaurants, good nightlife and plenty to explore.
Margarita offers far more than just a beach holiday, it is an exotic, lively, affordable destination with some fantastic places to visit both on the island and on the Venezuelan main land. It is also well suited to a twin centre Caribbean holiday.
