While some islands claim a different beach for each day of the year, the
volcanic, forested island of Dominica claims as many rivers. Unusually, too,
for the Caribbean, the emphasis is away from the beaches, of which there
are few, and is focused on an ecological wonderland of nature and culture.
For nature, the Morne Trois Pitons is just one of several national parks.
Gentle walks will afford fantastic views of the islands peaks and forests,
while bird lovers should keep an open eye for the indigenous Imperial and
Red-necked parrots, commonly seen during April and May, as well as
numerous other species.
Nearby, the Trafalgar Falls are quite spectacular with one fall of hot water
and another of cold cascading on to rocks below. For the more
adventurous, a more arduous six-mile trek will lead you to a Boiling
Lake of hot springs, sulphur omissions and the occasional mini eruption.
For culture, look no further than the traditional way of life still observed
by the fishermen, hunters and boat-builders. More than 2000 descendents
of the original Carib people still live in Dominica, many cultivating small
holdings for vegetables.
Dominicans tend to have their main meal at lunch-time which means that
eating outside hotels in the evening can be difficult. Try the'bakes', a fried
dough filled with fish or meat, or perhaps the local delicacy curiously
named mountain chicken - curious because it is a frog!
We recommend Dominica as part of a twin centre holiday to the Eastern
Caribbean to enable you to experience the 'Nature Island' before returning
to the beach.
