Cape Verde Islands holiday information
Cape Verde is an Archipelago of ten islands lying like a jewelled necklace off the coast of West Africa.

Holidays in the Cape Verde Islands

The Cape Verde Islands are an exciting new tropical holiday destination offered by Iglutropical.com. Located off the West coast of Africa, with Mauritania and Senegal their closest African neighbours, the Cape Verde Islands share the same latitude as the Caribbean Islands of Jamaica and the Dominican Republic. The islands of Cape Verde are relatively undiscovered by tourism and enjoy an excellent year round climate, amazing sandy beaches and warm seas. At under 6 hours flying time, the Cape Verde Islands makes a great winter escape and is more exclusive and exotic than for example the Canaries or Egypt. Further to this the time difference is just an hour. The Cape Verde Islands are hugely diverse, and the people extremely friendly, welcoming and hospitable. Cape Verde residents are a cultural mix of the island's two nearest neighbours – Brazil and Senegal. This unique mix is most obvious in the ever-present Cape Verde music; an intoxicating hip-swinging fusion of Salsa and Samba sprinkled with tribal African.

Cape Verde Islands

We offer holidays staying on three of the larger Cape Verde Islands, Sal, Santiago and Sao Vicente as well as the opportunity to go island hopping, or twin-centre the destination with a stay in the Gambia.

The Cape Verde Islands of Sal boasts beautiful white sand beaches and turquoise seas, is the most convenient to visit and has the widest choice of hotels. Espargos is the capital and is well worth a visit, as is the fishing port of Palmeira. People come here for the water sports and beaches as well as the relaxed yet quite lively nightlife of Santa Maria where the hotels are based.

Santiago is the largest of the Cape Verde islands and is also the most African, with a full and fascinating history, as a former stop off point for slave ships heading off to America. Two mountain ranges are situated in land with lush green valleys between them, in which a variety of agriculture thrives. Produce from the valleys can be bought at the bustling African market in Praia, the capital of Cape Verde. A trip to Cidale Velha, the old capital is also a must when visiting Santiago.

Sao Vicente, considered the cultural centre of the Cape Verde islands, is where you will find Mindelo with its 19th century architecture and cobbled streets reminiscent of a colonial past. Beautiful sandy beaches adorn the island with it also reputed as one of the world’s top windsurfing and body boarding destinations.

Highlights on other Cape Verde islands include Santa Antao’s mountainous scenery, the live volcano on Fogo, un-spoilt beaches on Boavista as well many further, smaller islands.

It is very easy to while away your time here, relaxing on the white sand beaches, fringed by the translucent aqua marine sea. For the more energetic amongst you, why not go on an excursion to discover more about Cape Verde's rich culture and history, or even visit neighbouring islands to the one you are based. Cape Verde offers an abundance of water based activities including fishing, whether that be with the local fishermen using traditional methods, or blue water, deep sea fishing. Windsurfing and kite surfing are popular in Cape Verde, due to its constant breeze providing idyllic conditions for these sports. Indeed Sao Pedro beach on Sao Vicente attracts international champions. There is also great walking, horse riding along un-spoilt shores and excellent bird watching opportunities.

Please note:

British citizens travelling to the Cape Verde islands require a full British 10 year passport, valid for a minimum of 6 months upon their return. They also require an entrance visa, which MUST be obtained before travel. Visas must be organised no later than 7 days before travel.
