Standing between thirty and eighty kilometres from the Venezuelan coastline,
Bonaire and Curaçao, like their sister islands further north in the Caribbean,
are Dutch territories and, together with Aruba, which gained Independence in
1986, they are known as the ABC Islands.
Bonaire is a divers paradise with very little commercial development and
water so clear that ifs hardly necessary to enter the water to see the marine
fife. Curaçao also has excellent diving and has the benefit over its neighbour of
other facilities such as world-class watersports, first class shopping facilities
and a charming capital, Willemstad, with gabled red-roofed townhouses that
are so typically Dutch. Inland, there are plantation houses and a synagogue
which dates back to 1732, one of the most historical landmarks in the entire
Caribbean.
Although the smallest of the three islands, Aruba certainly has the best
beaches with the stretch between Palm Beach and Eagle Beach acclaimed as
one of the finest in the Caribbean. This is where the main hotels are found and
in fact where much of the activity is to be enjoyed. Windsurfing is excellent
and other watersports facilities are also readily available.
Eating out in the three islands can be as varied as you palate demands.
Antillean seafood is richly prepared and the hotels offer the widest variety of
international dishes. There are numerous quality restaurants in both
Willemstad and Oranjestad, the capital of Aruba.
