Bhutan holiday information
The kingdom of the thunder dragon, Bhutan, is located in the eastern Himalayas between China and India and is a highly traditional and cultural country. Untouched by the modern impacts of tourism, Bhutan offers visitors the chance to explore the pristine environment of the Himalayas away from the main tourist trails. It wasn’t until 1972 that Bhutan allowed tourists to enter the country and currently all visitors must travel on a guided package tour as independent travel is not permitted.

Thimphu, the capital, lies in a beautiful wooded valley on the western side of the country with the country’s airport in Paro in very close proximity. The climate of the area varies from quite tropical in the south, temperate in the centre to cold in the high north. It is governed by a democratic monarchy and the local people still have very deep roots in Buddhist traditions and mythology. With Bhutan’s mostly mountainous landscape it is little surprise that the main activity here is trekking, however it does also offer visitors the chance to go rafting along the Mochhu River. Attractions within the country include a must visit to a Dzong (fortressed monastery) or to see a colourful tsechus (cultural festivals). Once visited, Bhutan offers a holiday like no other and in turn an experience that will always be remembered.
