One of the best places to see wildlife in Africa.
Botswana is one of the riches countries in Africa and enjoys a high standard of healthcare, education and stability. Sharing borders with South Africa, Namibia and Zimbabwe most of the population live in the eastern part of the country. Most of Botswana is actually covered by desert wilderness; the Kalahari desert blankets much of the country.
While the Kalahari desert itself is home to many exotic species of bird and wildlife the main attraction of Botswana for the tourist are the wildlife reserves. These are kept lush and filled with wildlife by the Okayango river which, along with a very strict and ahead of its time conservations policy, makes these reserves such a haven for all manner of wildlife. Safaris are available in a number of reserves. The best known of these is the remarkable Moremi Wildlife Reserve.
One of the other main attractions is the capital, Gaborone. Named after the Chief who moved his tribe there in 1880 it is a good miniaturized example of what Botswana has to offer. There is an internationally renowned National Museum housing ancient arts and crafts from across Southern Africa. The third largest game reserve in Botswana is also situated not far from the city and when you have had a day at safari then you can come back to Gaborone and frequent one of the many clubs, bars and restaurants.
