Anguilla is a low-lying coral island with crystal clear water, with some of the finest beaches in the Caribbean.
It’s hard to imagine that only forty years ago Anguilla revolted against the neighbour islands, St Kitts and Nevis, who wanted their independence from Britain. Anguilla went its separate way from these two islands, and is still today proudly remaining a UK dependent territory.
Today, there are no signs of the violence and hostility that once occurred on this paradise island. You will be greeted by friendly smiles and the warmest hospitality you can imagine.
The capital of Anguilla, the Valley, is not the most vibrant city you will see. With a population of approximate 500, it might be found somewhat unexciting. The Valley’s most exciting landmark is St Gerard’s Church, which is the venue for the garden parties held throughout February month. Here the guests will be entertained by the local musicians.
In the Caribbean, Anguilla is best known for its boat building. The traditional boat race takes place during the carnival in August, which is watched by the enthusiastic islanders.
Shoal Bay is one of the best beaches on Anguilla, with the nearest reef only ten metres off shore. Shoal Bay and the rest of the Anguillan beaches all offer excellent diving and snorkeling opportunities. Other popular water sports are windsurfing, water-skiing, sailing, kayaking and fishing.
Anguilla offers many superb restaurants. Blanchard's, at Meads Bay, is a regular winner of the Wine Spectator ”Award for Excellence”. What makes Blanchard's so special is the combination of style and sophistication, combined with a first-rate Caribbean menu. Other exciting venues are Johnno’s Place, which every Friday afternoon holds a beach party, and Pump House playing live music into the late hours.
